IFTA License And Decal Renewal

IFTA, the International Fuel Tax Agreement is active between 48 contiguous states and 10 Canadian Provinces, where the member jurisdictions act cooperatively to administer and collect motor fuel use taxes. The idea of IFTA was to establish and maintain the concept of one fuel use license and one administering base jurisdiction for each licensee. IFTA works when you have to report fuel tax to one or more state each quarter. However, today we are going to speak about IFTA renewal of license and decal.

IFTA license is renewed annually and its due by December 31st. However, for some states, mail renewal is not accepted and some states they mail the renewal papers. The process varies from state to state, some state offer online renewal and some states renew IFTA license automatically as long as the carrier is current with the quarterly filing.

However, do note, if your account is not in good standing, your IFTA license are likely not be renewed. That means you should pay your dues on or before applying for a renewal. And if you have missed your quarterly filing, you need to file it immediately to get your IFTA license renewed.

Additionally, if you don’t receive your renewal papers in the mail, it does not mean you don’t have to renew your license. You are still hold responsible for the renewal by the due date. Carriers renewing their IFTA license and decal have two months of grace period (January and February) to display their renewal IFTA license and decal. Do note, the extended due two months time is to display your credentials not to file your application to gain the credential.
